How to Mulch Your Beds the Right Way (and the Mistakes to Avoid)

June 3, 2026 Green Boss

Fresh mulch is the fastest way to make a yard look cared for. It also does real work: it holds moisture in the soil through a hot Virginia summer, keeps weeds down, evens out soil temperature and slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down. But mulch done wrong can hurt the plants it's meant to protect.

When to mulch. Spring is the classic time — once the soil has warmed up, usually April or May in the Roanoke Valley. A fall top-up after the leaves are cleaned up helps insulate roots through winter.

How deep. Two to three inches is right for most beds. Less than that won't stop weeds; more than that can keep water and air from reaching the roots. If there is already a layer from last year, you usually only need an inch on top.

Prep first. Pull the weeds, clear out old debris and cut a clean edge between bed and lawn before the new mulch goes down. Mulching over weeds only slows them down, and a crisp edge is what makes the bed look finished.

Keep it off the trunks. The most common mistake we see is the 'mulch volcano' — mulch piled up against the trunk of a tree. It holds moisture against the bark, invites rot and insects and encourages roots to circle the trunk. Leave a few inches of bare ground around every trunk and stem.

Keep it off the siding. Mulch against the foundation or siding holds moisture there and gives insects an easy path into the house. Keep a gap.

Choosing a mulch. Shredded hardwood stays put on slopes and breaks down into good soil. Dyed black and brown mulches hold their colour longer. River rock or stone borders keep mulch in the bed and look sharp along walkways.
